SMART ADVICE

Self-Defense

The whole idea of self defense is to have and not need.  You want to be prepared but you don’t want to have to defend yourself if at all possible.  It almost sounds like a contradiction.

Martial arts, firearms, knife, pepper spray or taser devices are a last resort type of response.  Our first response should be to avoid any problems.  Practicing situational awareness is the key. By being aware, we can avoid a lot of potential problems.  That is the best self-defense technique.

STUN GUN AND TASER DEVICE USE

In the class we cover when you can legally use a taser and a stun gun. Basically, you can only use a taser or stun gun for self-defense, defense of another person or for protection of property.

Situational awareness is very important. Being able to assess the situation correctly is the key. By being able to properly assess the situation, you can take the necessary steps to be prepared and to protect yourself and your loved ones. Also, you need to know how to handle the legal ramifications of protecting yourself and others.

No matter how good the device is, it does you no good if you don’t have it ready when you need it. If you are in a situation, the device should already be in your hand and ready to deploy. You don’t want to have to fumble for your device after something already happened or worse, not have your device accessible because you left it at home or in your car.

Know the limitations of the device you are using. Stun guns only cause localized pain and will not incapacitate a person. You also have to make and maintain contact with the person. The Stun gun will not work if you don’t have or lose contact with the person. Not saying that the Stun gun is not an effective tool, it is a great deterrent.

Tasers on the other hand are capable of incapacitating a person. Again, there are limitations. Two projectiles come out and are required to complete a circuit. So, you have to be accurate. Both projectiles have to be on the person to work. If you miss with one or both projectiles, it will not work at all.

Understanding the limitations of the different devices will help you pick the right one for your needs. We have a nice selection available during the class and you are able to try out all of the devices before you buy.

Please continue to practice with your device and be prepared. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
